Oh Come All Ye Wasteful – And Have Yourself An Eco-Friendly Christmas
We are 100% behind the fact that Christmas is the most wonderful time of year – particularly when it involves kids – but sadly it is also one of the most wasteful too. Indeed, household waste is estimated to increase by 30% during the festive season alone.
Don’t get us wrong, we love a bit of festive fun as much as the next person – but like so many other elements of modern life, is the way we’ve got used to doing it these days is all just getting a bit too convenient?
After all, what kind of a gift are we giving the next generation in continually turning to single use plastics and other quick fixes to satisfy our consumeristic cravings? A long-lasting, eco-nasty ghost of Christmas future is what - if we don’t at least try and start changing our ways now, that is.
And when exactly did the spirit of Christmas come to mean throw away stocking fillers, one-time advent calendars and novelty clothing accessories that get worn once and then thrown in a drawer (or, worse still, in landfill) never to see the light of day again?
But look, no one wants to be a Scrooge about it. Like we said, we’re all for decking the halls and trimming the trees - we just like to be smart about it if we can.
Christmas is after all the season of goodwill to all men, and what better way to show you care is there than taking the time to create a gift with your own fair hands, for example?
A quick look on Pinterest or YouTube is all you need these days to get creative - or, if you’re more about the cooking why not bake your way into your loved ones hearts this yuletide? You could even double up on ‘Christmas shopping’ and quality family time by getting the young ones involved with a themed baking kit too.
Taking the time to think before you buy can also save you the earth both literally and financially too. Giving them a gift they will truly savour, and more importantly that will last, stops you buying needless tat in the process. Finding stocking fillers that last and are genuinely special is also a great way to reduce environmental impact overall, as well as the amount of excess junk which inevitably ends up lying around the house post-Christmas otherwise.
And if you’re planning a festive gathering why not ditch disposable party platters for some incredibly stylish and highly affordable sustainable Christmas themed tableware? Available to hire as well as to buy, save yourself from spending again in future years as well as your cupboard space, depending on what suits you best.
After all, it’s all good and well dreaming about a White Christmas - but we think having a green one can be a pretty darn magical experience too.
